Conditioning children got me thinking about books and my own childhood. Here is a reflection on it.
Children’s literature from the 17th up to the 21st century has consistently supported core elements such as binary genders and social class hierarchies, even if the context has evolved. Children’s books blend didacticism and entertainment, often reinforcing traditional values while incorporating modern themes like globalisation, technology and societal change. Despite shifts in storytelling, I found many based structures remain unchanged. Early books (19th century) reflect imperialist ideals, emphasising hierarchy and binary gender roles. These stories often focus on boys’ journeys to adulthood, marked by emotional growth, bravery and the shedding of childhood innocence (that latter is another created evolving myth overtime).
